Sorry, but I couldnt wait until the meeting to start asking questions. I want to take my son (age 10) fishing to a place where he has a good chance of catching some eating size catfish. I don't want to take him to one of those pay ponds because he knows how to fish. My main concern is that I don't want to do a whole lot of trail and error with him and get him frustrated.

Roddie,
I don't know what part of town you live in, but there are quite a few places that don't cost a thing where you can go fishing. There is a nice pond in Live Oak. I grew up in that neighborhood and have always had good luck. The water is stocked with catfish, bass, and trout.

As Tery said, there are few places here in Texas where you don't have to pay for fishing. But try Calaveras and Braunig Lakes. They are cheep, close by, and known for catfish and bluegill, among some other fish. Also, the is Brackenridge Park, where the fishing is free. Some areas of Medina River and the San Antonio River are accessible for the public and fishing as well.

Good luck!

Thanks guys. I live in the NE side, just a couple of blocks from Madison HS, near Judson Rd. I wanted to go back to Braunig but some fella told me that if I fish from the bank, I'd spend hours sitting and maybe just a few minutes catching. I think Live Oak is closest, but I'm also considering renting a boat from Ft. Sam Houston this weekend and see what I can do on Braunig. I've just got the fever reaaaaaal bad.

That fella is probably right, you spend more time waiting then catching. Yet, you have those red drum go throuh Braunig in the morning and afternoon. It's known as the "redfish express", and they hit hard when they come through. Also, Calaveras and Braunig are full of Bluegill and Tilapia, which are frequently caught off the bank on bread and worms.

Good luck and keep us posted on your catches. Hope to see you at our meetings.
